ITFS Zoopraxiscope by Johannes Schiehsl

During the third year of the studies at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, the animation students have the opportunity to design and create a trailer for the Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film. There are no given topics or limitations except a maximum running time of one minute that should not be exceeded and a strict deadline one month before the festival. The full production time took place over the course of five months.

No rotoscoping was used, but a lot of video footage came in handy to study animal movement and behaviour in order to get out strong keyposes and continiously push them. The film was animated by drawing frame by frame into Adobe Flash on a Wacom Cintiq. After Effects and Premiere were used for post production, and with Maya the final shot of the clip was build and rendered. The 3d software also came in handy for some “pre-layouts”, which were previews of complex camera movements that were then used as camera and staging references for the 2d animation.

Concept art, animatics, motion tests, and more below. Looking forward to seeing Johannes’s senior film!
