Through Public Access Design, designers work collaboratively with CUP and a community organization to break down a complex policy or planning issue for the group’s constituents. The partners collaborate to create an accessible visual tool on the issue, which takes the form of either a printed publication, an interactive graphic, or a short video or animation. CUP manages the collaborative process, provides production costs, and helps staff each project with additional design support, research, and writing as needed. In the first year of the program, Public Access Design projects included a fold-out guide to housing court for public housing residents, an interactive roadmap to the criminal justice system for immigrants, and a stop-motion animation on labor practices in the retail industry.

Applicants should be interested in both social justice and a collaborative design process. A jury of leaders in organizing, advocacy, design, and art will meet in July to review applications and select a small group of designers to join the program. The members of this year’s jury are:
