Trollback + Co: Hippies

I love that headline. If you know anything about Trollbäck + Co’s modernist portfolio, you know they are anything but hippies. That’s why creating this :30 promo for the History Channel’s Hippies show (aired July 9th) must have been a voyage into new territory for them.

The spot is full of beautiful compositions unified by fluid movement and a lush palette. I do think, however, that Cooper Black is a bit predictable for this subject matter. And the tank rendering is a bit too “3D” for the rest of the spot, isn’t it? I would have liked to have seen more of a color-corrected, stylized rendering, something that suggested newsprint or television coverage from the 60s maybe. Regardless of my minor quibblings, I’m excited to see Trollbäck letting its hair down a bit.

I can not wait until you get out into the real world.

I know I’m going to regret responding to your passive aggressive comment, but I’ve got six years of “real world” design experience under my belt, and I’m currently working full time as a motion graphics designer. So I guess you don’t have to wait any longer.

On second thought that was kind of a dick comment before. With that said I think your comments on cooper black etc. are correct, and I am glad you called them out. I am surpised Trollbäck would make something like that.

For some reason this just hits a sore spot for me, I think that Motionographer in general is not always a very fair forum for companies like Trollbäck and Company. I think that we all have to respect how Trollbäck and Company has not caved into trends.

justin

@tomtom: I totally understand what you’re saying. I only post work that I really like and respect, and I hope that comes through in my post. T+Co should be given respect, but because they operate at a higher level than most, they should also be held to a higher standard.

I made the jab about Cooper Black because T+Co always pride themselves on their strong typography. Their type decisions are usually one of my favorite things about their work. That’s why the type in this project jumped out at me.

At any rate, thanks for your clarification. I really appreciate your honest and thoughtful criticism.

The problem with motionographer is that it has grown so big beyond its purpose of been a personal blog. Obviously, some people take it for granted as a portal of news related to the motion graphics industry. It is good to remind that it doesn’t represent the voice for what is good or bad, nor any serious journalism, just a designer who like to blog and associate his name to advertise his works (good for him).

If this was a newspaper in the reel life, it would be so biased that it would make Karl Rove wetting his pants.

Maybe it’s time to grow and turn it into a non-personal website, a portal for the motion graphics industry?

beta_test, you’re an idiot, this IS a portal into the world of motion graphics, there are multiple contributors and its not merely a personal website. The newspaper analogy you made has no relevance to a blog about motion graphics inspiration. Of course it is biased, no one wants to sift through the whole crop, just the cream of the crop. Go take your Engrish comments to another site.

beta_test

@martz, what a schmuck you are. If you think this IS the portal about motion graphics, let me ask you then where are the news about the Trafik, Gauckler, RBG6, Delcan, etc?
Even so, I like to visit this site. Justin has spent quite some time on it, but I frequently visit other blogs to get what he won’t showcase.

BTW martz, I was checking your reel, maybe you should get more inspired, it’s full of stereotypes. Get a book sometimes.

Dear beta_test

First i said A portal, i too can use the internet to find other sources of inspiration, second, don’t attack me personally, my work has nothing to do with this, i am still a student and alot of my work is as you put it “stereotypical” right now but i have more time in school to improve upon it. I could continue ripping on the fact that you said “get a book sometimes” because of how incredibly ironic that statement is, but i won’t, our internet argument isn’t accomplishing anything, just like your random attack on motionographer that had nothing to do with the spot by Trollback, for the record though beta_test, i hate you.
