I love the choice of typeface. the colour scheme. One look at it and you can taste the film on the tip of your tongue. (that hint of seventies retro?) mmmmmm….slick indeed.

great work. I applaud the decision to use only one typeface. Designers so often throw their whole arsenal of typefaces at a project like this and as a result they can look smug and over designed. Congrats, Jarratt, if you ever find yourself in London looking for work, look me up.

I agree, Simon, nice restraint in terms of use of fonts, but I see three typefaces in there … Rockwell, American Typewriter and then Mistral (? I think). But the fact that each is used for only one particular voice / tone at a time and also colored consistently is part of the success of the piece. Nice job, Jarratt.

Yes, the idea itself is nothing new. This typeface thing has been done so often. But for a student piece it’s nicely executed.

reminded me of an intonation study one did off of the movie “Fight Club” - it was so well executed that it didn’t even need the aid of audio to go along with it… I’ll post a link if I find it.

Yeah great work, but what is really stunning for me, apart from the palette, is the blood stain work.

Usually when you copy someone else’s work you add a little bit extra and take it a step farther, but this one’s an insult to MK12’s Macho Box.

some of the longer sentences that are said really fast dont work so well, when the font is gigantic… unreadable, maybe he was going for that. its good for student work, but its not anything amazing.

this is a really solid piece, the mk12 comparison is stupid, especially because they don’t look that alike, and we are comparing one students work to a whole studio. props to you jarratt, dont stop the good work. also, you “designers” that are whining about choices in work by motionographer? i think its refreshing to see what students are doing, they will be creating better work than you soon enough.

why does joel lava and PES get a quickie? cuz Justin likes to ride on other people that he knows. this piece does look like mk12’s old stuff from 5 years ago. But hey that’s what a student does… people usually get inspired by real work out there to learn how to do it. Only thing is… I don’t know why this is featured.

imo the rule at the end makes this piece. the scale of the type is perfect for the ironic and anticlimatic effect of the VO.

I like the piece, only thing that irked me a bit was there was no use of question marks, I think they could have made a really solid impact at the end of most lines.

i think belief said it best in their pollinate videos that everything is a copy of a copy of a copy - how “original” it is depends on how well you hide your sources - or how obvious they are.

how come we never see Justin Cone’s work? we just see an old website. I’d like to see what this guy does now since he’s back in school. Yet he’s a critiquer… yet nothing we can see from current stuff. come on Justin don’t be afraid.

Its actually not as similar to Macho Box as everyone is making out, Macho Box had alot of 3 dimensional depth and growth of the typography, i mean technically, its similar in some ways, but i wouldnt say he ripped it off, i think he may have been inspired. But all the same, beautiful typography and animation…but as everyone else is saying, not sure why its a feature

I think it’s a great piece probably because it follows such a simple system but at the same time is constantly suprising me with little details.

Beside MK12 wasn’t the first. They ripped off others. Was it theDesignersRepublic who first came with these type animations, i think for their “grammy winners” video.

Johannes Gutenberg came up with movable type. Inspired it all. RIP OFF!!! Keep in mind that it is a student piece and it does have some feeling in it, sometimes omitted by fellow acrobaticians designers and animators from big studios.

Sorry but i am missing something.. People seem to love this piece.. Sorry but it seems that there is no sense of what is good or bad.. I think is a mediocre piece. It seems most people here are used to very low standars

I liked the use of typeface, colour, scale and motion in this piece. The timing and pace of the piece works brilliantly, but that has a lot to do with the fine performance of the original cast.

Overall I enjoyed the whole experience, but I’m intrigued by the comment made by MICA that “there is no sense of what is good or bad”. Was it directed at the people posting here or the feel of the scene in the piece?

I liked the piece. I liked the use of typography. I liked the changes in direction, and the use of blood splatters and whatnot to accentuate the typography (and the dialogue!) in key scenes. Is it ground-breaking work? No. But as an exercise in creativity AND learning - and especially considering this came from a student - it’s pretty good.

I agree, not that cool. After all, it is student work, and it looks like a student project. I hope motionographer doesn’t become a whore page for SCAD students.

Forgive the initial ramble…

I’m a nerd. I build the backend for very large websites. As such all the designers I work with on a regular basis hate me because I think black text, white background with no styling or graphics is great because it equals performance and low bandwidth costs
Kudos to the designers who remind me that sometimes graphics and styling are important (Cat, Kerri, Brett, Tai - sorry!).

I never (or very, very rarely) feel the urge to flag graphics to other peope (beside the fact I have no credibility!) but as a layperson this piece is awesome.

Unlike the jaded professionals who point out that it’s been done before (and I’m sure I remember use of animated typography on kids TV shows such as early Sesame Street) they forget. This is a student. Doing a homework assignment. On his own. Not a studio with a dozen dedicated folks and an intern to fetch the coffee, a client to bill blind and half a million dollars worth of equipment.

It seeks to deliver a message, in a constrained medium while capturing the feel and mood of the dialogue. And it succeeds.

It heartens me to see talented ceative newcomers like this (and amuse me to see the jaded hacks try to knock them down to protect teir own lame reputations and work). I open magazines, visit websites, watch TVCs today and fail to be engaged by the vast majority.

If this had been a product pitch the pace, energy and simplicity would have piqued my curiosity. I expect to see it surface (ripped off by a mainstream agency) but without the purity advertising dog food or something very soon!

I like how it ends talking about fucking Mrs. Wallace….who is also the president of SCAD

Unlike the MK12 material this one is better for what the other lacks. Simplicity. The MK12 piece is wayyyy to cluttered and doesn’t track well. Just a jumble. This one has a lot of humor and is projects the intense dialogue better. Even the blood isn’t distracting.

Plus I’m a sucker for watching type fall into a jumble. (Don Hertzfeldt did this to great comedic effect in “Rejected”) Great opening, and really makes the sound foley a feature and not something that needed to be skipped over.

Jarratt… can I get in line to give you another fellow-SCAD-student-sympathy-hand-job?!!

I also like Joel’s updates.. his work has been maturing in a really good way as he has been in the game since before the vector days. He also seems to be more of a music video style designer now.

oh and justin’s friend’s typo what-ever it is thingie is ummm… donno…. a good excersise? im not sure what we are suppose to be looking at other than someone learning to keyframe type sideways, upwards and down to keep up with VO in after affects…? well, ummm… have a good day?… i mean im not sure what we are suppose to be saying here….?
