Distant Future Uses Visual Storytelling to Explore Connection Across the Maritime World

Yorkshire-based Distant Future Animation Studio has created Maritime Connected, a 90-second animated film exploring the unseen relationships between people, industries, and communities connected by the world’s oceans.

Through a series of interconnected visual scenarios, it explores how disruption in one part of the maritime ecosystem can have consequences far beyond the sea itself.

The team set out to create a narrative that could be understood through imagery as much as language. Character performance, composition, and atmosphere became the primary storytelling tools, allowing the film to communicate across cultures without relying heavily on dialogue or exposition. Culturally diverse characters and a deliberately non-Western voiceover further support the film’s international perspective.

Produced by a team of three artists over a three-month period, Maritime Connected combines hand-crafted animation, motion-capture performance, and bespoke ocean simulation work. These techniques were used not as visual spectacle, but as tools to support the story’s emotional clarity and sense of scale.

A lot of the narrative is communicated through character performance, composition, and atmosphere, which allowed us to tackle a complex subject in a way that felt engaging and broadly accessible.”

The film has also been shortlisted in the Excellence in Creative Craft category at the 2026 Prolific North Creative Awards.
