Directors Harmony Korine and Sam Goldwater continues their expansion into game culture with a new trailer for Marathon, the upcoming title from Bungie. Created through Korine’s experimental studio EDGLRD, the trailer leans into abstraction, atmosphere, and sensory impact, favoring mood over exposition.
Built as a CG-driven piece, the work blends aggressive motion language with stylized realism, emphasizing world-building through texture, scale, and rhythm. A large, multidisciplinary team collaborated across animation, motion capture, environments, FX, lighting, and an Unreal-based pipelines to realize the vision.
“This project was about pushing scale and density without losing clarity,” says Yates Holley, who served as Head of CG for EDGLRD. “Harmony’s direction demanded something bold but disciplined, where every technical decision served the feeling first.”
CG Supervisor John Kim adds, “We weren’t trying to explain the game. We were trying to make you feel like you’d already stepped into its world. The goal was impact, not instruction.”
The resulting trailer sits somewhere between a game reveal and a piece of moving art, signaling Bungie’s willingness to let Marathon exist in stranger, more expressive territory.
