A True Story | Carolina Melis

This 90-second film, produced by the Sardinian Film Commission, supports Sardinia’s candidacy for UNESCO World Heritage status by highlighting the unique and irreplaceable value of its Nuragic sites—stone structures dating back over 3,000 years.

Blending cinematic storytelling with AI-generated imagery, the film explores the tension between reality and simulation. It begins as a vintage postcard and transforms into animated visuals evoking key cultural moments: the 1960s, with Fellini-inspired scenes contrasting tradition and change; the 1980s, nodding to E.T. and early Apple design; 2006, with the rise of low-cost travel; 2017, the age of selfies and mass sharing; 2020, marked by emptiness and isolation; and 2025, where the Nuraghe becomes a distorted “Newraghe” shaped by AI.

Amid these illusions, the real Nuraghi remain—silent, solid, and timeless. In a world of endless simulation, they embody authenticity and memory.

The film also affirms the power of AI as a creative instrument—shaped by clear artistic direction and human vision. It is not merely algorithmic output, but a work infused with emotional intention and authorial presence.
