Spring (Jieru) Tang crafts a 3D brand film exploring Gucci’s The Alchemist’s Garden fragrance series, translating natural ingredients into photorealistic material studies. This is a 3D commercial film I created for Gucci’s The Alchemist’s Garden fragrance series. In 2025, Gucci launched the collection inspired by the four stages of alchemy: Substratum (Earth), Vaporum (Air), Liquidum (Water), and Ignis (Fire). This series moves beyond the conventions of traditional fragrance design and embodies a deeper philosophical and symbolic system rooted in alchemical culture.
In this film, I explore how to translate natural ingredients into photorealistic 3D material studies, while expressing the alchemical symbolism of each fragrance through abstract motion language. Alchemy is the process of refining essence from nature, and Gucci reframes perfumery as a form of emotional transformation, where each bottle becomes an experiment between matter and emotion. This concept led me to construct an alchemical laboratory. The environment is designed as an immersive space that guides the viewer into the internal structure of the fragrance and reveals the cultural narrative embedded within the brand.
The film begins in an ancient laboratory, where materials are continuously deconstructed and reassembled. It moves through the transformations of Air, Water, Fire, and Earth, before entering an evolving tunnel where the four fragrances gradually take shape and are ultimately born within a new laboratory space. During the production process, I conducted extensive research into the natural ingredients of each fragrance and developed multiple material simulations in Cinema 4D. Through experimenting with motion and camera language, I aimed to express the individuality of each scent while maintaining the alchemical framework and reinforcing Gucci’s visual identity and tone.
