KEYFRAMES | Stefan Klauss

KEYFRAMES is a 60 sec animation about … animation. An abstract short of a character transitioning through a reduced and stylized environment with parkour, bmx and skateboard moves.

Stefan Klauss left his job as a lead animator at Framestore in London to pursue something creatively his own. Moving back to Berlin, he went freelance so he could dedicate time between gigs to a personal project.

The idea was more about vibe than traditional storytelling. Klauss had been fascinated by action sports like parkour—watching athletes move through their environment without narrative, just pure motion. When he came across this animation definition, “the state of being full of life,” it felt like the perfect link to parkour, which embodies exactly that.

The biggest challenge and, as a result, the hardest part, was doing everything himself and pushing it to a point where he felt ready to release it, even though he’s primarily an animator. In the end, since it was a one man project and he wasn’t able to bring Daft Punk out of retirement, Klauss decided to do the music too.

KEYFRAMES was animated and rendered in Maya (Arnold). The Comp and Motion Design was done in After Effects, and the Music in Ableton.
