Sojourn is a concept video game trailer created in Unreal Engine, self-directed by David Lea.
David took on every stage of the pipeline himself: from concept development and direction, through mocap performance, environment and character work, to final compositing and grading. The project was built primarily in Unreal, with additional work in Blender, Nuke, and DaVinci Resolve.
For the direction, he focused on keeping the camera grounded, paying close attention to lighting and shot composition to give the film’s flow a greater sense of weight and presence.
A key challenge was to create empathy for a robotic antagonist, achieved through the threat of its situation, expressive faceplate graphics, and touches of subtle humour.
