‘Mirror’ is about the violence of intimacy. The closest relationships make us vulnerable to the greatest joy and greatest hurt.
The opening image comes from Pedro Almodóvar’s ‘La Ley del Deseo’ (1987). The main character is a filmmaker who tries to script and direct the lives of people around him, mistakenly believing he can protect himself from emotional risk.
I show the evolving barrier between the two cowboys as a hard line of mirror, a porous substance that loses reflectivity, and then their own skins and orifices.
Flash/Adobe Animate is based on loops; so much meaning can be conveyed by simple repetition. Looped actions here evoke patterns of behavior and the exhaustion that leads (for good or ill) to acceptance.
