A title sequence for an imagined HBO-style adaptation based on Jeff VanderMeer’s “The Southern Reach” series of novels, weaving together timelines and plot strands from across the books with nods to the legacy of Alex Garland’s 2018 film adaptation “Annihilation”.
Charlie Keeper began this project as a way to develop his narrative approach while pushing his 3D skills further. Over time, it evolved into something much more ambitious.
The sequence explores the birth and spread of Area X – a force that absorbs the characteristics of our world and reflects them back in altered form. The visuals hint at both the ecological transformation as well as the creeping psychosis experienced by the characters.
Keeper has admired Jay’ Ragsdale’s work for years and felt his sound would perfectly capture the atmosphere. After finally reaching out, he was fortunate enough to collaborate with him on the score.
