The Way Home started off as a single piece of key art Zack White had created in college and several years later grew into its own short film. White had wanted an avenue to show studios that he would be a good fit for this kind of work and this was his way of showing potential clients that he could indeed create this sort of cute, whimsical content suitable for all ages.
A little background on the story from Zack White; “A few years after college, I had moved out of state for a couple of a bit and while I had made some great friends while I was there (which was the best part about the move) it just wasn’t a great fit and I eventually ended up moving back to Ohio where I grew up.”
“It was quite cathartic finishing this film when I had moved back; what started as a sketch several years prior that had nothing to do with the final narrative, it ended up evolving into a short story that summarized everything I had felt during my time away from Ohio.”
The score and sound design was eventually revisited a few years later by 8.bit.ghost; his work really tied everything together into one big adorable bow.
