This Short Film, my undergraduate capstone at SCAD, delves into the personal realm of dreams. I envisioned them as onion-layered stages from personal experiences, joyous aspirations, and hidden fears – echoes of the subconscious mind.
The concept of “lost echoes” reflects the lingering nature of dream memories. These impressions resonate softly within us, like faint whispers in the quiet, influencing our waking consciousness in subtle yet profound ways. This narrative transcends dream exploration; it’s a personal odyssey into the subconscious, a reflection on the mind’s delicate nuances, and an intimate journey into how dreams carry our innermost thoughts and emotions.
My dream journals revealed a recurring theme: vivid dreams centered on family and familiar activities. But sometimes, the emotional impact lingers even when details fade. In one semi-lucid dream, I controlled my actions, yet the overwhelming emotion stemmed from a realization: my own death.
Observing my grieving family, I pondered the fears underlying these dreams. Could they represent my fear about leaving them? The fear of growing distant, missing out on their lives while pursuing my studies abroad? Returning to Indonesia after four years intensified these feelings, unveiling the growing distance and fear that, the longer I stay away, the more detached I become from the familial bonds I cherish.
