Inside a miniature workshop, a team of small, apron-wearing artisans gets to work. Chris Ullens turns the making of Diptyque’s wax Médicis vase into a stop-motion film, following the process through a world of curved workbenches, tiny tools and softly lit arches.
Commissioned by Diptyque, Ullens developed the concept, directed the film and animated its characters. The warm, restrained palette keeps the workers’ gestures in focus as they pour wax into molds and attend to the finished vases. A full-size candle beside the bench makes the scale of their world clear.
The film’s physical craft extends to the characters, with design by Connor Chung, 3D rigging by Gary Mellor, printing by Aldo Camilleri, and cleaning and painting by Rosie Tonkin. Jamie Durand handled cinematography, Ben Cote art direction, and Audio’s Most Valuable the music and sound effects.
Ullens also shared a making-of film, opening up the miniature set and the practical work behind its carefully arranged scenes.
