A quiet lake, a little bread, a few ducks. AJ Jefferies starts DUCKS with the familiar pleasures of a day in the park, then lets the birds disturb the peace.
The idea began on a family walk. Watching three ducks dip their heads underwater, Jefferies imagined what might happen when they came back up, making his children laugh. Those improvised jokes grew into the short.
In his interview with Animation Mentor, Jefferies describes writing a full script before committing the ideas to boards. Keeping them in words gave him room to change the visuals. He made the film around commercial work, handling writing, direction, design and animation, with music and sound design by Megalithic Sound.
The submitted process images give a glimpse of the characters before the final lighting and textures: the park visitor leaning over the lake, and a woman caught mid-sandwich.
