In ‘Lona’, a poignant stop-motion short, discarded shoes transcend their soles to become silent witnesses to the electric pulse of a rock concert. Directed as a danced tribute to the young lives shaped by Argentina’s tragic Cromañón fire, the film reimagines tragedy through metaphor: sneakers and boots twist and leap in frenetic stop motion, their movements echoing the raw energy of a mosh pit. Amid the chaos, flowers bloom from frayed laces, their petals unfurling as symbols of rebirth, while the rhythm of tapping soles becomes a defiant celebration of joy that refuses to be extinguished.
Through meticulously crafted frames, Lona transforms grief into a delicate dance of memory. The sneakers—scuffed, vibrant, alive—pirouette across scorched earth, their choreography a bittersweet dialogue between loss and hope. ‘Dancing isn’t escapism here; it’s resistance,’ notes the director. By weaving stop motion’s tactile magic with imagery of wilting dahlias and resilient blooms, the film whispers a truth: even in tragedy’s shadow, life insists on moving, grooving, and reaching for the light.
On December 30, 2004, a nightclub fire claimed 194 lives, and it was no accident. The Cromañón massacre was preventable had politicians and business owners not prioritized profit over the lives of thousands of young people. Memory is built and organized. That is why survivors and families have been fighting for justice for 20 years.
The boys and girls of Cromañón are PRESENTS.
