Capturing a century of wit, culture, and iconic design is no small task—but that’s exactly what ROOF Studio set out to do. Partnering with Le Truc and Condé Nast’s Creative Marketing Team, they created a striking animated film to mark The New Yorker’s 100th anniversary. The outcome is a vivid tribute to a magazine that has shaped conversation, culture, and imagination for generations. But this wasn’t just a history lesson in motion. ROOF delivered a visually rich, page-turning journey through The New Yorker’s century-long run. Drawing from literature, art, current events, and cultural touchpoints, the film turns iconic covers into moving illustrations of the magazine’s lasting influence. As ROOF Studio Co-Founder and Director Guto Terni put it, “Working on this was a massive honor. This magazine hasn’t just reported on the world—it’s helped shape it.” The foundation for the visuals was a poetic script created by The New Yorker and Le Truc. Instead of following a strict chronology, the film was anchored by the recurring line “One Hundred Years of…,” which allowed the team to explore the magazine’s themes from a more human, emotional angle. With over 5,000 covers to pull from, ROOF treated the archive like a playground. They ditched the traditional storyboard in favor of an intuitive approach, letting tone and theme guide the sequencing. This freedom gave the team space to experiment—with scale, transitions, and visual motifs that matched the rhythm of the narration. To finish it all off, the score—an inventive twist on Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” by Human—wrapped the project in the same spirit of iconic reinvention.
