Sharwood’s Go East vs. Sahara ONE

brandoldschool.jpg

I just want to point this out since we’re on the topic of Brand New School’s new work below and I’m not really seeing anything “New School” about it. Both studies shown here have their differences, but you can’t escape the similarities. The live-action dancing around in 3D environments. The magic mirror hallway and kaleidoscopic backgrounds. Check it out…

Who cares…. does it even matter? Well… that’s kind of why I wanted to make record of this issue and open it up for discussion, because it seems to happen quite frequently in our industry. Now we’ll all know where the “inspiration” came from, next time we see it again from another studio.

wow. your saying Belief is being ripped off by Bns. that is a powerful statement.

I know bns hasn’t produces anything of worth for sometime now. but to say a “B” shop like Belief is ripping off bns, is some funny shit.

These motion graphic sites are for people who do not know anything about the work or the industry.

spiritform

Actually, no. I didn’t say anything about anyone being ripped off. Your second sentence makes absolutely no sense at all..and your third statement is waaaay off. I just wanted to point out how it resembled Sahara ONE, a piece Belief made over a year ago (period).

Dushbag

Actually, they both ‘resemble’ Mandala! It’s a Asian artform from before your greatest grandpa’s were born. Learn your shit, then make false accusations.

wca

how long does your intern at Kinkos last? Maybe next summer they will let you open after effects..

i am tired of getting links to this pretentious website, when the bloggers make uninformed and idiot comments. The people who do these posts obvisiously have no idea what they are talking about. They learn a couple of new words in art school, are infatuated with the small world of motion graphics, and feel that they have a broad understanding of art. Get your nose out of your dorky graphic blogs and put it in an art history book. Or have a wonderful career making crappy endtags and phone number supers for credit card commercials.

no, your studio is sooo last season

Something people dont take into account is client creative direction. Something we are all at the mercy of. Alot of times clients will give a studio a direction they want, sometimes its stolen or “borrowed.” Agencys dont give a toss, they are seeing this from a marketing standpoint and could care less about the integrity of it. Though I doubt this is the case here. This seems like just a coincidence of unoriginal motion graphic cliches, for the 8 millionth time.

Jon

Woah, feel the hate. I see where Babe is comming from – not so much implying a rip-off, but certainly a similar approach. Everyone has doubtless seen something similar before. As no, your studio is sooo last season says, its an example of cliches appropriate to the subject matter run amok.

In response to ‘These motion graphic sites are for people who do not know anything about the work or the industry’ – I daresay you are in the minority. All except one of our authors has worked professionally, and the response and communication we have from well-respected studios and individuals is huge.

I suggest if you have a problem with our ‘pretentiousness’ or what we post, you stop visiting.

Oh, there is another BNS clip to be released to the public soon which looks great, I’ll be looking forward to the feedback on that.

dooda

no doubt there are some infuences and copy-cat going here. but lets not forget the first thing about this business. its about creating great work. when someone out there does something really cool everyone will try and mimic that look.. ie “frozen in time” look that the matrix did. sometimes its done right and other times… uhhh, not so hot. and clearly this is one of those moment. but hey give bns credit for trying. not everything we do is a homerun.

but seriously though… can we somehow push this kaliediscope effects further? :)

Spiritwho?

Spiritform, I’ve had a low opinion of you for awhile based on your posts to Tween, but you’ve just graduated from poor taste to brainless hater.

“The live-action dancing around in 3D environments. The magic mirror hallway and kaleidoscopic backgrounds.” as you put it – brilliant writing, by the way – is so broad as to be meaningless. I think most of us who know what we’re talking can see right away that although the two pieces may have some similarities in overall concept, calling BNS biters makes about as much sense as saying that Rent bites the West Side Story because both of them involve singing and take place in New York.

And yes, you did call BNS biters.

Overall, I think this is a fantastic blog. It’s just you I have a problem with, Spiritform.

Kai

Well, first off, I’m just a student and has been a regular tween-motionographer visitor. It’s kinda disappointing to see all these happening, I mean you people might be professionals working in this industry and what is all these personal comments all about? Spritwho?, you wouldn’t even reveal your own name/nick and you’re making it all so personal with spiritform, what’s all this about? He’s just trying to bring up a discussion and there’s nothing wrong with it, if you don’t agree with it, just say you don’t. Come on, grow up and discuss it in a more professional way. Afterall, it is all these people who brings us all the updates and videos. Without them, motionogapher wouldn’t be motionographer.

spiritform

Hahah…wow. It’s okay people, calm down. I didn’t mean to offend any of you new school fans out there and make it sound like BNS are just a bunch of biters. I happen to like them both. Personally, I think Belief’s piece is more soothing on the eyes (and ears). The cinematography is also more complex and organic, but they also don’t seem to have the 3D character animation skills of BNS…yet. For all I know, BNS could even be poking fun at Belief’s work. Mainly, I just think it’s interesting how something like this happens, especially when it’s a subconscious thing. So… You can hate me all you want, but I’ll still continue to post what I feel is relevant and should be noted.

JJR

Spiritform, seriously, stop while you are ahead, well, I take that back, you might not be ahead anymore.

For one, that is not biting, that particular aesthetic is part of the eastern culture vernacular. Your comment was like saying, “well, BNS did something in the russian constructivist vernacular so that means anybody who does something russian looking, that is biting”.

That is just retarded.

You are doing this website a disservice. This is a GREAT website with very interesting topics, I think one of the best ones out there due to the smart, witty writing by Justin.

Don’t wreck it…

AlexJ

Ive read the post a few times and I still fail to see that Spirit was attacking BNS. I had no idea who did what before the other… and it makes no mention of that either. Maybe it was implied but it’s surprising to see such “defensive” comments come back:

QUOTE: “These motion graphic sites are for people who do not know anything about the work or the industry.” Damn! That’s arrogant.

I just thought Spirit was bringing up the point that different agencies end up coming up with the same concepts/ideas. Whether it be by chance, inspired by, or straight up biting…. that’s left to the viewer.

Personally I think these two samples are similar in style but didnt make me think that either were biting off each other. They are both badass companies that stand on their own. Without WCA or JJR’s help. ;)

DAMO

I have to agree with AlexJ here. I saw no attack by Spiritform but what I did see a bunch of haters. The notion is strong that once something is fresh it is used to the fullest tilt in the design community. The recent Apple commercial controversy should be an example to this statement.
Bringing on the hate rather than treating it like a true discussion just sucks the life out of how great this site is. These guys do a great service to our design collective – like any other collective – haters don’t belong. Love to see the haters step up and posts some of JJR’s killer “russian constructivist vernacular” commentary and see if it flies with the lot of us that have been doing this a long time.

Sean W

Wow, thats pretty much all I have to say.

Fred Camino

my balls are aching.

JJR

Let me clarify my comments. This is a very hot topic, especially with the Apple vs. Lugs thing, this is no light subject matter. Having said that, I will say to bring up this subject matter, those were two extremely POOR examples to use.

Simple as that. Those two spots have absolutely nothing in common except the same eastern style. Did you not recognize both clients are eastern? If you want to bring up a topic like this in the future, then do your homework first.

And to be honest, 90% of the time that a studio bites, it’s because the client went to that company and requested that particular style or idea. It’s a no win situation.

DAMO, I don’t understand your last comment. Please, enlighten me!

JJR

Justin, I think it’s safe to say the commentary has improved since you’ve launched Motionographer!!! Tween was great, but this is has reached new level.

congrats!

no, your studio is sooo last season

“Now we’ll all know where the “inspirationâ€Â? came from, next time we see it again from another studio.”

” I didn’t mean to offend any of you new school fans out there and make it sound like BNS are just a bunch of biters.”

which is it?

Mugsy

I think that this mandala-style stuff is the new “deer-heads-and-paint-drips.”

Onur Aksoy

I’ve actually had to take a break while reading all this. To me it sounds like some of you have had a bad day and taking it all out on Spiritform, who hasn’t really done anything other than make an accurate line of reasoning ‘it seems to happen quite frequently in our industry’.

Some of your comments are needlessly hostile. We are all here on this site looking for inspiration and to motivate us. Subconsciously (and consciously) we are all taking bits our inspiration and applying it into our own work of wonder. What BNS has done is exactly that – just like so many other studios out there. This is what creates a trend, and it will become apparent in every industry.

cool both paragraphs ended with ‘industry!’ that means they ripped off eachother!!!! :O

justin

“Justin, I think it’s safe to say the commentary has improved since you’ve launched Motionographer!!! Tween was great, but this is has reached new level.

congrats!”

Ha! :-)

mathlete

People have a lot of spare time. Maybe now you guys can start a Mac vs. PC thread. That would be just as interesting.

Justin Cone

“People have a lot of spare time. Maybe now you guys can start a Mac vs. PC thread. That would be just as interesting.”

Hahaha… very nice.

dooda

im glad u wrote this article. it shows another side to our industry that some refuse to acknowledge.

enough said on this matter. now go do some great/original work. :P

donkey kong

“but seriously though… can we somehow push this kaliediscope effects further? ”

if anything both studios actually used the mirroring / keliedescope effect appropriately!

http://www.buddhart.com/buddha/

JJR

Thank you Donkey Kong, that is what I’ve been trying to say, it’s an eastern aesthetic and both of their clients were eastern so yes, BOTH studios created a look that mirrors that style.

That is why I’ve been saying those are two poor examples of comparisons.

I guess I should have backed up my statements with a url like you did.

Onur Aksoy

yeah donkeykong, so end of debate?…

spiritform

Just for the record (JJR and Dushbag)…I wasn’t talking about the cultural influence on style. It’s only obvious they are similar in that respect, since they both reflect similar regions of the world!

Forget it.

dooda

i think JJR and dushbag are smoking something from the far east as well.

seems like we have a couple of bns zealots.

Far

I guess BNS is not the hot shit in town anymore…ah-ah!
Congrats to you guys for opening debates.

EssKayUno

They’re pretty different. Why would Brand New School want to rip off Belief? Does Belief even care? Why is Belief always involved in these accusations? There is better work out there to talk about. Do you think Dial and Lever 2000 ever battle? Fight fight fight.

Mike

I am new to the blog and to the industry, but I love the opportunity to read what you all have to say. It helps me to form my own opinion about art, not commercial art. I guess I am one of the guys who needs to review art history to get some originality. Oh the irony.

jasfish

It’s America, baby. Everyone loves you on the way up and can’t wait to knock you down once you get there.

Besides, anyone who thinks a lot of the work out there is 100-percent original is nuts.

The buddha link was a good one .. a lot of stuff is cribbed from great art from the past.

So what? Does the inspiration really matter? As long as it works for the client isn’t that the ultimate goal? It’s not like it’s a direct rip like some things I’ve seen. It still has that BNS style to it.

Far

To pretend that BNS wouldn’t copy or rip off anyone else? Come on wake up… Most of their work is about “making homage” or “inspired” by works from Yellow Submarine to Milton Glaser, Pushpin Studio, etc. The more you know about design history, the more deceptive you may become. Don’t get me wrong, I think BNS people are very talented and I love their sense of humor.
As for saying that advertising agencies and their creatives are the ones who don’t mind ripping off talents from each other, it’s sometimes true but a little bit easy.
I have seen people who call themselves “creative directors” in some motion shops scanning pages from other companies or put a quicktime from the other shop in a presentation…

It’s up to the designers to have the courage to say “no” sometimes and try to push a little harder. But people want their check to pay back school, or later their mortgage.
First you copy, then you’ll get the money, then the BMW, then the pus….

JJR

LOL

Far, you are correct. Both are to blame, I’ve seen both sides many times over. I’m not going to say I’ve presented other studios quicktimes but I have referenced past work that was done. If you say you never have then you are lying. We all want to be original all the time but sometimes the client forces the, “do what works” comment.

Sometimes it’s the agency and sometimes it’s the studios. It’s the nature of the beast.

entertained

EssKayUno says: “Why would Brand New School want to rip off Belief? Does Belief even care?”

lol

mrJourney

I’d like to see all the trolls go back to mograph. Maybe it’s time to start filtering out non-contructive/unfriendly comments? We can do without the namecalling and general jerkiness exhibited in this thread.

Jon

Nah, people are entitled to their opinions and anything that generates discussion is good. That and censorship is too much work for us lazy folk.
