Against All Odds/XYZ Studios for Victorian Government

UPDATE: Full Credit List available after the jump.

Hooray for Melbourne! Thumbs up for the Victorian Government for commissioning this lovely animated spot–such a welcome change from their usually live-action based pieces. This one is directed by Against All Odds via XYZ studios for Grey Melbourne. My favourite bit is the facial expressions these characters have (especially the lady). The claymation look and tilt-shift treatment may not be new, but it’s delightful nevertheless.

I sincerely hope this is a sign that the Australian clients and public are sharing their love more equally between all-things-animated and all-things-live-action….

With all due respect, what did XYZ actually do on this spot? Just the Art directing? It appears as though Milford in Stockholm did the 3d, the lighting and rendering, and the post and compositing. According to the credits, and slightly more info here:

There are a lot of people in Oz who would love to do this type of work – maybe none of them are in Melbourne? In a “financial crisis” (which still seems to be going for the VFX industry), why are we sending work overseas when we are willing and able to do it here?

Still, it’s a great looking spot, and if XYZ are moving more towards AD and directing, then good for them. I will watch with interest.

Hey Scottg.
Can understand your concern in these times of the GFC, but XYZ Studios is not only an animation studio that produces work internally, but a facilitating house for animation directing talent from around the world.
This spot from againstallodds was Directed by Melbourne boy Derek Picken, utilising the incredibly talented team at Milford to produce, as you say, a great looking spot.
There might be many in OZ who’d love to try and do this job, but these guys are some of the best character based animators in the world, with a pipeline to match actually enabling them to pull it off, in the time allocated to the level you see before you, which is why they deserved to do the work, as the result testifies.
Hope things continue to improve in the marketplace here in Oz and that more of this sort of work finds its way into onshore production.
