Completely agree with Street. I read the interview as well. Putting someone’s name in the interview and saying the art direction was inspired by his work including other artists is not an excuse to ripoff ideas completely and not give any real credit or compensation to the artist.
Everyone who has seen his work asked “did you work on those titles?”
I love the work that IF does but this is unacceptable.

I see a lot of similar discussions nowadays, related to originality of the works… It’s obvious that there’s no way that something can come from out of nowhere or completely new. And it’s always been like that. Everything has its roots, rather it’s a smart combination of multiple inspirations or a different interpretation of the inspired piece. The only difference between past and present; now everything is reachable, and on sight. So most of the creatives are aware of many many works out there, much easier to come across similar perspectives and works.
I think IF did a nice job here, turning existing art into a moody, moving title sequence with nice type. I don’t think any artist at IF will deny that they got inspired by Kuksi’s work(which they already mention about it).
Motion Design works getting more and more overwhelming, crowded as a result of our time as many other things not only design, and I would like to point out that if we try see the big picture, nice work been created if we try to be more constructive by discussing the actual work instead of keep comparing or blaming the pieces.

being creative is fun and a limitless activity…it’s only when you are under the gun, and need to keep you business running and need to really sell your ideas do you start becoming desperate and need to rip off others work to get by… REAL ARTISTS are too egotistical and too creative to blatantly rip off other artists…its the business people and psuedo creative people that arent in it for the love of it that get caught up in these types of authorship dilemmas…..LIKE MILLI VANILLI, you know lip syncing pretending to be actually singing, filling in the lines already drawn by other artists…

Face it..if you were super talented you wouldnt need to use other artists work so heavy handedly in your own work.

Any chance you can get Kuksi himself to chime in on how he feels about this Black Sails piece?
I think this is worth further discussion, what better than to get the artist himself and IF designers together to speak on the subject of inspiration versus plagiarism.
