João Vaz Oliveira’s Reel 2026 is an experimental Motion Design piece where sound directly shapes the visual output in real time, first presented live at Atlas Festival in Lisbon. The project explores the relationship between sound and image, where audio directly influences and shapes the visual output in real time. Initially performed live with a drummer, the concept was later expanded and refined in a studio environment.
For this version, three different musicians were invited to interpret the system using distinct instruments. Each performance generated a unique visual result, turning the reel into a dynamic and evolving piece rather than a fixed sequence. The visual system was developed in TouchDesigner, allowing sound frequencies and dynamics to control transitions, timing, and visual behaviors. The final result reflects a balance between control and unpredictability, combining structured design with performative input.
